Pay Attention to This: Thunderpaw
by Luke Healy
Nothing gets me more excited than a comic attempting to do something I’ve never seen before.
Thunderpaw, a webcomic by Jen Lee is doing just that. Jen takes advantage of the webcomic format by having Thunderpaw’s gorgeous pages undulate and animate.
Each page of the comic consists of multiple animated .gifs. But, unlike most animated webcomics, which come across as a gimmicky afterthought, Thunderpaw embraces it’s animated nature with fervour.
Each looped moment is perfectly chosen, and the reading experience is enhanced rather than hindered by the movement on the page.
Thunderpaw also uses the infinite canvas in a way that feels natural and pleasing. The length of each page is not predetermined, but rather is as long as the artist feels is necessary.
One page might have you scrolling for just a few seconds, the next might take twice, or three times as long. One particularly impressive page has you scrolling horizontally across a beautifully animated landscape.
But at the most basic of levels, Thunderpaw is telling an interesting story with good characters. Seriously. Pay attention to this.
